Fifty years earlier the railroad’s predecessor had built from scratch a 360 mile line from the eastern extreme of the island at the port city of Santiago de Cuba west through Camaguey to Santa Clara, where it met the United Railroads of Havana’s 179 mile line that had been built eastward.
